How to Set Up a Hardware Wallet for Cold Storage
Move meaningful holdings offline so a compromised computer can't drain them. Initialize a hardware wallet the safe way.
You'll need: A hardware wallet device, bought new from the manufacturer.
Steps
- Buy the device direct from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller — never used, never from a marketplace listing.
- Initialize the device and let it generate a new seed phrase on the device screen.
- Write the seed phrase on the card provided (or metal backup) — never type it into a computer, phone, or cloud note.
- Set a strong device PIN.
- Install the vendor's companion app and pair the device.
- Send a small test amount first, confirm receipt, then move the rest.
- Store the seed backup somewhere secure and offline, separate from the device.
Watch outAnyone who sees your seed phrase owns the funds. A hardware wallet bought second-hand or 'pre-initialized' may already be compromised — always generate a fresh seed on-device.
